Why Your Website Doesn't Show Up in ChatGPT or AI Overviews

And how generative engine optimisation (GEO) can get you cited in AI-generated answers.

More and more people no longer search through Google alone, but ask ChatGPT directly or get their answer through Google's AI Overviews — the summarised answers that appear at the top of the search results. For businesses that aren't mentioned there, that means a growing share of their potential customers simply never sees them.

How search used to work

Classic search results

  • A list of links, ranked by position
  • The user clicks through to your page
  • Being visible means: ranking high in the list

What search looks like now

AI-generated answer

  • One summarised answer instead of a list
  • Sources are mentioned, cited or summarised
  • Being visible means: being part of the answer

Where traditional SEO is about ranking well in a list of links, visibility in AI answers is about something else entirely: being mentioned, cited or summarised as part of the answer itself.

AI systems build their answers from content that comes across as clear, structured and trustworthy. If your content doesn't meet that bar, it simply gets skipped — no matter how good the answer on your page actually is.

Why Businesses Don't Get Mentioned

Common reasons why businesses aren't picked up:

Content is too generic or too sales-focused

There's no direct answer to the question being asked

The website lacks authority because few trustworthy sources link to it

Structure and formatting make the core information hard to recognise

Content isn't updated regularly

Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO): SEO for AI

This is called generative engine optimisation (GEO): optimising content so AI systems can easily understand, summarise and cite it. It isn't a replacement for traditional SEO, but an addition to it, built on the same fundamentals — authority, structure, relevance — with a stronger emphasis on directly answerable questions.

Traditional SEO

Aims for a strong position in the list of links.

GEO

Aims to be named in the answer itself.

Built on the same fundamentals

Authority Structure Relevance

How to Optimise for AI Answers

In practice, this means:

  1. Open sections with a clear, short answer, followed by more depth
  2. Use logical H2/H3 headings that already state a question
  3. Build authority through trustworthy citations and link building
  4. Use structured data (schema markup) so search engines and AI systems know exactly what a page covers
  5. Keep existing content up to date, so it doesn't come across as outdated

The difference often shows up in the very first sentence of a section:

Not quotable

“In this article we discuss how to become visible in AI answers.”

This sentence only announces. Cut away from the page it says nothing, so there is nothing to quote.

Quotable

“You become visible in AI answers by writing content that answers a question directly, in a structured way, from a demonstrably trustworthy source.”

This sentence stands on its own. An AI model can lift it as the answer, with your site cited as the source.

Quick tip: write as if an AI model is going to quote your first sentence as the answer. Can that sentence stand on its own, without the rest of the page? Then you're in good shape.

Visibility in ChatGPT and AI Overviews doesn't replace classic SEO, it builds on it. Businesses that invest now in clear, well-structured, authoritative content position themselves for both: higher rankings in traditional search results and a better chance of being cited in AI-generated answers.
